Hiking in Rocky Mountain National Park
REGULATIONS

Camping is permitted in designated areas only.

Vehicles must remain on roads or in parking areas. Parking any vehicle or leaving property
unattended for longer than 24 hours without prior permission is prohibited.

All wildlife is protected from hunting or harassment, and it is illegal to pick or damage flowers and plants.

Dogs, cats and other pets must be under physical control at all times.
They are not allowed on trails or areas not accessible by automobile.

A valid Colorado fishing license is required to fish in the National Park. Use of bait is prohibited
except under special conditions. Many lakes are closed to all fishing, including Bear Lake.

Use of stock is only permitted on specified trails. Check with park rangers
for which trails are open and closed to horse and llama use.

Technical climbs do not require registration, except for overnight bivouac. Climbers are to avoid
placing permanent protection. Many climbing routes are subject to seasonal closures. Check with
rangers to obtain a full list of climbing regulations and to verify if routes are open.

BACKCOUNTRY CAMPING

The National Park requires everyone to have a permit to camp overnight in any of the backcountry's
120 campsites. Campers are permitted to camp in the park for 7 nights between June and September,
with an additional 14 nights between October and May. Permits must be picked up at the
Backcountry Office near Estes Park or the Kawuneeche Visitor Center near Grand Lake.
