These images are from my summit visits, see Part 1 for the sightseeing photographs. The summit tour started with one of the easiest 14ers, Mount Evans, which is really a drive rather than a hike. After walking the short path to the true summit, I returned to the parking area at 14,130' to watch and photograph a large gathering of mountain goats. Later in the week the real hiking began, with day hikes up 14,003' Huron Peak, 13,461' Quail Mountain and 14,433' Mount Elbert, in a span of five days. I followed the standard route up Huron from the South Clear Creek area south of Winfield. My route up Quail started via the trail from Sheep Gulch to Hope Pass, then continued off-trail to the summit. For my ascent of Elbert, I used a hybrid of an old mining road, Black Cloud Trail and South Mount Elbert Trail, creating a long loop hike from the South Mount Elbert Trailhead that gained over 5,300 feet. Here are the summits... If you prefer to browse by thumbnails, please see below, otherwise proceed to the high-resolution images. |
