Day hiking to R.M.N.P.'s Haynach Lakes involves a round-trip effort of about 18 miles. This was the longest day hike I'd ever attempted, but I was determined to see the Haynach Lakes basin. This area of the park that has an underground fan club; those who know the park well rank it among their favorites. A park ranger I met during the same weekend referred to it as the rangers' "secret place". While the approach means some long, uneventful miles at times, the basin itself was well worth the visit. With a great moose sighting and some pretty waterfalls and cascades along the way, this was another fun day in Rocky Mountain National Park.
